Area in Focus; Retford or East Retford

Retford, also referred to as East Retford, is a vibrant market town situated in Nottinghamshire, England. Positioned on the banks of the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal, Retford is strategically located 26 miles east of Sheffield, 23 miles west of Lincoln, and 31 miles north-east of Nottingham. The town's population, as recorded in the 2021 Census, stood at 23,740. One notable feature of Retford is its bypass by the A1 road.

The town has a DN Postcode (Doncaster) however Retford is actually part of Nottinghamshire not South Yorkshire.

The historical borough of East Retford underwent expansion in 1878, incorporating Ordsall, West Retford, and a portion of the Clarborough parish. It was famously known as a rotten borough, heavily influenced by local landowners, the Dukes of Newcastle, until reforms were introduced in the early nineteenth century.

Established as a burgeoning settlement on the eastern side of the River Idle in the early twelfth century, Retford is claimed by the town's charter trustees and Bassetlaw District Council to have gained borough status in 1105. Although the town's earliest charter dating back to the thirteenth century attests to its borough status, Piercy (1828) posits that the first charter was granted in 1246 by Henry III, permitting an annual eight-day fair. However, conflicting views by Ballard & Tait (1923) and Dolby (1997) suggest that there is a lack of historical evidence supporting this claim, thereby recognizing the 1259 charter as the earliest documented grant. Retford has been bestowed with a total of 17 Royal Charters, including the pivotal Letters Patent of 1225 conferring the right to impose tolls on travelers in North Nottinghamshire, the last of which was granted in 1607. This marked Retford as only the second borough in Nottinghamshire, succeeding Nottingham, with Newark following suit in 1549.

The town encountered significant adversities in the 16th and 17th centuries, including devastating fires, a plague outbreak in 1558, and intermittent flooding in various years, notably leading to substantial damages and loss of life. During the Civil War, Retford managed to evade widespread devastation but not without engaging in skirmishes and hosting notable historical figures, as documented in local historical records.
