Doncaster - An 1887 book by John Tomlinson... a timepiece recovered from a recent house clearance
Delving into the rich history of Doncaster from the times of the Roman Empire to the present day, John Tomlinson's book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the local area. Found during house clearances in Doncaster and South Yorkshire, this hardback book is a special find, featuring captivating local images and detailed accounts of the towns and villages surrounding Doncaster.
John Tomlinson, a prominent figure in Doncaster and Thorne's history, resided on Thorne Road in Wheatley while penning this book. Born in Epworth in 1834, he moved to Thorne as a child and later established a hatting business with his brother that expanded to Rotherham and Doncaster. Initially contributing articles to publications, Tomlinson's most notable works include 'The Level of Hatfield Chace and Parts Adjacent' (1882) and 'Doncaster from the Roman Occupation to the Present Time' (1887). Serving as a Councillor and Mayor, Tomlinson likely gained access to the Corporation's archives, as evidenced by the extracts from their records in his books.
In 1883, Tomlinson constructed Polton Toft, an elegant house on Thorne Road, although the architect remains unknown. Following his passing in 1889, his sister and her husband continued to reside there, eventually transforming it into Elgin House School. Today, the building houses offices while still retaining its historic charm within a Conservation Area at the junction of Thorne Road and King's Road.
In the 1890s, Tomlinson's sister Ann and her husband George Clay established the John Tomlinson Charity, which funded the construction of 12 almshouses in Elmfield Road. Both the almshouses and the charity continue to exist as a testament to John Tomlinson's legacy.
