Doncaster's historic Grand Theatre, a Victorian landmark in the city center, is scheduled to be auctioned
Doncaster's historic Grand Theatre, a Victorian landmark in the city center, is scheduled to be auctioned later this month with no minimum guide price.
Built in 1898, this grade II-listed building on Trafford Way, adjacent to the Frenchgate Centre, served as a theatre before being converted into a bingo hall in 1963. Unfortunately, it closed its doors in 1995 and has since deteriorated, landing on the Theatres at Risk Register earlier this year.
Despite efforts to revive the theatre as a performance venue, a recent feasibility study revealed the need for urgent repairs before reopening, even with reduced audience capacity. The building still boasts its original curved galleries, a stage with a proscenium arch, and a beautifully decorated plaster ceiling.
James Vandenbrook, associate director at Mark Jenkinson auctioneers, expressed optimism about the future of the Grand Theatre, stating that the auction with a nil reserve could pave the way for a new chapter for this beloved Victorian icon. He highlighted the potential for the theatre to contribute to the city center's economy once again, either as an arts venue or through sympathetic redevelopment similar to the successful projects seen in other historic properties like the Wool Market.
With interest from multiple potential buyers, it seems that the Grand Theatre may soon find a new owner eager to restore its former glory and bring life back to this cultural gem in Doncaster.
Hopefully something else for Doncaster residents to be optomistic about!
